For those who prefer text:
Gillian Urswick and Kit Marlowe (short stories): The Kit Marlowe shorts fill in some background on the Silver Circle, the main magical organization mentioned in the two series, and provide information on a cross-over character, Elizabethan bad boy Christopher (Kit) Marlowe. They can be read at any time, before, during, or after the main series. So far, they include “The Gauntlet” and “The Queen’s Witch,” both available for free on this website and at Smashwords.com. Gillian and Kit are also featured in Time’s Fool and Fortune’s Blade, from the Dorina Basarab series mentioned below.
The Cassie Palmer books (main series): The time traveling, ghost-whispering, crazy blonde who started it all currently has thirteen books in her series: Touch the Dark, Claimed by Shadow, Embrace the Night, Curse the Dawn, Hunt the Moon, Tempt the Stars, Reap the Wind, Ride the Storm, Brave the Tempest, Shatter the Earth, Ignite the Fire: Incendiary, Ignite the Fire: Inferno and Hijack the Seas: Seismic. The books follow each other chronologically (as much as possible with Cassie’s tendency to time shift.) They are best read in order but also stand alone reasonably well. They tie in with and overlap the Dorina Basarab series set in the same universe.
Extra free stories for the Cassie Palmer series: These are available on the website and (most) can also be found at Smashwords.com. If you want them in paperback or in one collection, they are also sold in that form on Amazon as the Cassie Palmer Collection. “Updating Pritkin” is a tongue-in-cheek glimpse into life around Dante’s casino, and it can be read anytime. “Shitty Beer” is a John Pritkin short set during Claimed by Shadow. “A Family Affair” and “Shadowland” are Pritkin shorts set between Curse the Dawn and Hunt the Moon. “The House at Cobb End” deals with Pritkin’s life before the beginning of the Cassie series, but to avoid spoilers, it should also be read after Curse the Dawn. “The Day of the Dead” features Tomas from Touch the Dark and Claimed by Shadow, and it should be read after those books.
The Dorina Basarab books (main series): There are seven books that tell the story of the dhampir daughter of Mircea Basarab, a major figure in the Cassie Palmer series. A number of crossover characters and plotlines connect the two series, which I have always viewed as one. The current books are Midnight’s Daughter, Death’s Mistress, Fury’s Kiss, Shadow’s Bane, Queen’s Gambit, Time’s Fool, and Fortune’s Blade. The reading order of the books is as follows: the first Dorina (Midnight’s Daughter) can be read after the second Cassie (Claimed by Shadow) because it concludes the storyline begun in that book. Or, if you wish to read chronologically, it can be read after Embrace the Night, the third Cassie, which it overlaps. The novella, “Buying Trouble” (available in the On the Prowl anthology or by itself as an e-book), should be read before the start of the Dorina series, as it sets up some of the conflicts of Midnight’s Daughter. It is not necessary to understand or enjoy the novel, however.
Extra free stories for the Dorina Basarab series: The short story “In Vino Veritas” from the Chicks Kick Butt anthology (follows Death’s Mistress), the novella “Zombie’s Bite” (a prequel to the Dorina series), and the novella “Lover’s Knot” (follows Fury’s Kiss) can be found for free on this web site and at Smashwords.com. The novella “Dragon’s Claw” (also follows Fury’s Kiss) is available for purchase.
Masks: This is a full-length Mircea Basarab novel set in fifteenth-century Venice. It details his early life as a vampire and gives some insight into Dorina’s.
Siren’s Song: This is a full-length John Pritkin novel set in magical Hong Kong.
Lia de Croissets (short stories): There are four Lia de Croissets’ stories for now: two shorts (“Rogue Elements” and “Vegas Odds”), a novella (“Skin Deep”), and a novel (Junk Magic.) They can be read anytime and as an addition to either series. They are set in Las Vegas, like the Cassie books, but deal with the war mage corps and Were politics. “Skin Deep,” the novella from Inked, can also be purchased as a standalone.
