Hi everyone,
I wanted to give an update, and to explain a little about what’s been going on. First, an apology for not getting back to you sooner, but the fact is that I didn’t know what to tell you. I was caught in indecision, trying to determine the best path forward, and didn’t know what I was going to do. I’ve never had this problem before in fifteen years of writing.
I’ve finally figured things out, and wanted to explain what I’m doing and why I’m doing it. That’s especially important as many of you may not know much about the indie publishing world, as I didn’t when I first started. And still don’t, in many respects—I am definitely still learning.
But I have picked up on a few things, such as the fact that putting out really long books means that I basically don’t get paid at all for the paperback versions. Printing costs are simply so high that they eat away all of my profits. For the last Dory book, for example, I made nothing on any paperbacks sold, because the book was 161,000 words. After publisher’s profit and printing costs were subtracted, there was simply nothing left.
That was a problem for me, because indies already don’t make much off our books in the first place. I realized that, next time, I really needed to try to keep the word count down. Most traditional publishers also operate this way. They much prefer books to be between 100,000 and 120,000 words, because that increases their profit (it lowers publishing costs) while still giving the readers what feels like a substantial book. My books almost always went over that maximum, in some cases by a lot, but fantasy requires a lot of world building, so they put up with it. It didn’t exactly make me popular, though.
So, there was always that tension between telling the story the way I thought it should be told, and telling it in a short enough fashion to be acceptable to my publisher. And now that I am an indie, that has become even more of a consideration. I therefore tried, really hard, to pare down Ignite the Fire, without realizing that I was warping the story in order to do so. When I went back in to do the edit, however, the time when you are looking at the whole book instead of taking it piece by piece, I realized . . . this isn’t okay. This isn’t what I want to put out.
As a result, I went back in to make a few corrections . . . and then a few more . . . and then to better explain that over there and this over here and . . . and ended up with something that read, oh so much better! It’s such a good book, it really is, and I’m so very proud of it. But there’s just one problem. No freaking way can I publish it and make any profit at all. Or else the price I’d have to charge for the paperbacks would be so high that no one would buy them anyway.
So, what to do? I finally realized that the book, or should I say books, have a natural break in the middle. I can split them into Ignite the Fire: Incendiary and Ignite the Fire: Inferno, and put out the whole, properly paced and properly told story. Which is what I’ve finally decided to do, although I know full well that it will annoy some readers. I can understand that: who wants to pay twice to get a complete story? Especially now, when money is tight for a lot of us. I get it, and I am aware that I will likely lose sales over this. But allow me to give you my reasons.
First, I got into writing to tell beautiful stories. Maybe you think I’ve succeeded, maybe you think I haven’t. But I can honestly say that I have always given you my best, every single time I put something out. I never stinted, or cut corners, or said, welp, that’s not right but I have a deadline, so screw it. And let’s face it, we’ve all read books from writers who we know did that. I don’t blame them; they want to keep their jobs, and publishers put amazing pressure on their authors to get books in on time. I lost my job largely from missing deadlines, so I can certainly sympathize. But . . . I just can’t do that. I can’t put something out that isn’t my best or isn’t finished or has been chopped to death to fit a page count. It might not be as good as what someone else can do, but it has to be my best or I can’t live with it.
Second, I would like to keep writing and telling my stories, but I have to eat. I don’t need a lot of income, because let’s face it, I never made much at Penguin anyway. But I have to pay the bills, and to do that, I have to keep the books shorter. Now, for any new series, that wouldn’t likely be a problem. Touch the Dark was only 107,000 words, for example, which is about industry standard. But it was also the first book in a series, not the eleventh.
The longer a series goes on, the longer the books tend to get, especially fantasy stories (look at Harry Potter) because the world gets bigger and themes and plot threads from earlier on in the series start to get tied up. And that is especially true of fantasy stories that deal with another realm, like Faerie. World building eats up pages like nothing else, but without it, the stories feel unfinished, unreal, or just unsatisfying. But putting out a 190,000- or 200,000-word book as an indie is simply not feasible. Not if I want to make enough to keep writing.
So that is why I am splitting the book. I have wrestled with this decision a lot, and I hope you understand. But I also know that it’s the right thing to do. I have spent too long with Cassie to screw her—or you—over now. And what’s the point in being an indie in the first place, if you can’t tell stories the way they need to be told, instead of the way a publishing company’s rules allow? At the end of the day, I’m a writer. If I can’t write good books because of artificial restraints, then what’s the point?
And Ignite the Fire is a very good book.
So, look for Ignite the Fire: Incendiary in late May and Ignite the Fire: Inferno in late June. And, as always, thank you for your support and patience while I figured everything out.
Will there still be an audiobook for Ignite the Fire? And if so, will it be like the printed edition—split into 2–or one audiobook? I love listening to your books. And the narrator is amazing! Please let there be an audiobook!
There’s going to be an audiobook, but I don’t yet know whether it will be split or not. As soon as I do, I will give an update. Thanks for your interest!
Hi Karen
I appreciate the explanation and will be looking for to Cassie’s new adventure .
I will gladly pay for your books . In the latest Cassie and Dory adventure I also purchased the audiobook.
I would love to have all the Cassie and Dory adventures in audiobook….is this on the cards in the future ?
All of them so far have been made into audiobooks. I hope that will continue so that the entire story will be available in a recorded form.
Yay you go Karen 😊🙌 so glad you have found a work ahead the restrictions from publishing companies – the story comes first always! I’ve loved your books I’ve read ALL the Cassie Palmer novels, Dorina novels as well as every novella & the stand alone book from mircea & pritkin and still yrs since the start I can’t get enough of them, I read them all again many times over (in chronological order of course 😉)! Thank you for your honest update regarding this book and troubles getting it out right in the right way for us and for you, and I know we all want you to keep writing! Will we be able to preorder both parts of infinite the fire on kindle soon? I also wondered if they’ll be any more from mircea following masks and also following the book from pritkin’s view? As personally I think that’d be an awesome avenue to continue down, though I imagine having too many deadlines of main/spin off series might get a tad confusing but I think you’d do amazing. Thanks, Mandi (UK).
Hi Karen, so if we buy the kiddl or ebook edition… You would get more money?
The Cassie Palmer story is so fabulous. I love to read it. Its one of the few series I know every book is worth reading and not just a boring repeat of previous storylines. I would be willing to pay 12€. Some books are this expensive anyways. Last week I read “fugitive telemery” by martha wells in 7 hours, and I wondered why I even brought it afterwards. Your books are all worth it!
I would also like to know this. I’d be happy to buy both either way!
I’d like to know which would be better for you as well, Karen! Do you make more if we buy say the kindle edition or if we buy a paperback? I’d be happy to do whichever is best for you! :)
Your storytelling makes me feel like I’m there with Cassie. All of the laughs, the horrors, and the sorrows, you would feel through and through.
I haven’t read stories like that since Harry Potter and god knows that’s been AGES ago.
I would buy any amount of books needed to finish your stories.
Thank you for the escape from reality.
Thank you for the explanation and for the care for the story and your fans.
I love the fact that you decided to keep the books with the background they need, but still find a way to make profit.
I’m not at all bothered to buy two books if the options were to get an less well written story, or worse, you (the author) wouldn’t get any profit for you book.
Again thank you for sharing your thoughts with us.
Ana Monteiro
I’m just so glad to hear from you. I was worried that we simply weren’t going to get the next installment of your series. I’ll buy both books because I’m invested I. Cassie. Best of luck!
Karen, I will read whatever you put out. If a book needs to be broken into 3 parts so be it. I have all the Cassie and Dorina novels in print as well as in ebook format to have with me wherever I am. You have a flair for wtiting an amazing story with lovable characters that I can picture in my minds eye that makes me laugh out loud and cry. I am currenly rereading all the Cassie and Dorina books and short stories in the timeline order since the new year begun. I have two left before Ignite the Fire…but I have no worries as I know they will be worth the wait as always!
I’m actually glad you decided to do two books instead of cutting content. To me the Cassie / Dory books are my favourite series that I read over and over. I would rather have two amazing books than one that doesn’t tell the full story. Will definitely be ordering both of these the moment they come out
Same :)
Me too! I couldn’t have said this better myself! Honestly, my reaction to this news is more “Wow, you mean I get two books soon instead of just one? That’s awesome!” than anything negative. I would be thrilled to purchase two books (and audiobooks too)! I am happy to support my favourite authors and you are definitely in my top 3!
I think this is the absolute best decision you could have made and I’m very excited to get two books soon!
Just happy to hear we are going to get to read book 11. I guess it will be 11 and 11.5 I will buy both I love this story. Keep on writing thank you for a great story.
I support your decision 100%. I love all you book.
Hi Karen.
That sounds perfectly acceptable! I am super invested in your stories and your writing is amazing. Please do not adjust your writing style for anyone but yourself! I will happily buy the book in two parts to get the full story and having them only a month apart is reasonable. It would only upset me if you split them and then didn’t release them close together, because it would feel really disjointed I think. I cannot wait to see what’s happening! Thank you for the update!!
I like reading ebooks but when it’s books that I love I like to have hard copies so I will be buying both. I’d rather gt the full story in two parts than a cut down version in one so it doesn’t matter to me. Keep up the great work because I love the Cassie and Dory books and I know they’ll be worth the wait.
I will support you in anyway that works for you. I love your books and will buy them in any capacity you put them out. Thanks for writing the stories we love!
Dear KC,
I understand your decision and support you. I hope that most of your readers will understand your reasoning as well.
This isn’t by far your first book and we have come a long way since then. I love your writing and will keep reading your books. Your writing is action packed and full of wonderful details. It’s a joy to get absorbed in this magical world you have built over the years. I’m thankful for every little piece you give us.
Kudos to you ♡
I love both story lines too much to quibble over one book or two. I’m just happy to know the stories continue!
Thanks for the update.
Your books are so addictive, I’ll take them however we can get them. Any updates on publishing dates for the two new books now that we are into June?
Yes, the first is now out and the second will follow soon. :-)
KC, I would buy your books no matter cost or size but I understand that isnt practical for makingmoney. I adore your detailed writing, expansive world and character development and have since I started to read your books. However you need to put them out, I’ll be happy to read them. Thank you so very much for these stories, I don’t know how many times I’ve read them or how many times more I’ll revisit them but you have certainly gifted me with a series that I will cherish for life.
I support your decision and can not wait to read the next set. They are ALWAYS worth the wait!
Very understandable. Love this series and world. Can’t wait to buy both volumes. :D
I can’t see why having an additional Cassie book wouldn’t be the most wonderful thing :) Finding out what you want or what your goal is and then fighting for it and looking for ways to make it possible, finding them and doing it – that’s awesome! We’re lucky to have you, thank you so much for always doing your best! ‘Inferno’ sounds pretty scary, I’m looking forward to it 🦇🔥🔥🔥
I understand completely (also an indie author) print versions make next to nothing unless you charge an arm and a leg. I always buy the e-book versions first as the author gets most of the proceeds from the sale. After that, when I can afford to treat myself, I buy the paperbacks too for my bookshelves. Split books or not this is just what I will continue to do. Keep up the good work – your books are always well worth the wait 🌷
It’s the best decision. Whatever you write, no matter if a book needs to be split into parts, I’ll be reading. Touch the Dark was the first adult fantasy I read so I’ll be there until the end. Love Cassie. Love Dory. The books have always been worth more, they’re epic!
Absolutely fine with me. I would never want you to sacrifice the story. Always happy to buy your books and if that means more then that is fine with me. Thank you so much for creating this world and story. I love this series and will read them to the very end. Thank you for explaining even though you didn’t need to. Your stories are amazing and I love your characters. Do whatever you think is necessary.
As a bookseller and a reader I appreciate authors for the imagination ,creativity and sweat it takes to build a world readers can get lost in. I get frustrated by so called industry standards that have forced so many writers like yourself into this kind of rock and hard place situation. Whatever stories you write and however you need to release them I will continue to buy and recommend your work. You never disappoint. Thank-you.
Yay! 2 books instead of 1… Sounds like a win win situation to me!! I love your books and am thrilled at this news!
So glad that you are fine (we do worry when you are quiet), I completely understand your dilemma, and as an avid fan this is the best outcome I could hope for. Keep writing, and I’ll keep buying – but make sure you are making enough to live at least comfortably.
Thanks for the update, Karen. However you publish your tales, in whatever form, I will always be happy to purchase them. Having followed you ever since your first stories in the anthologies to your fully fleshed Cassie and Dory novels (and various novellas), I can honestly say you are the only author I always buy both print and e-book versions of every release. You consistently write beautifully, completely realized stories with amazing world building (particularly the mix of ancient history and mythology from various cultures plus the modern world), complex characters and plot lines, fantastic action, smexy times, and wonderful humor. I reread both Cassie’s and Dory’s books several times a year and still find myself discovering new facets of each story I hadn’t considered before. Thanks for always writing your best and sharing your creativity with us.
Thank you so much! I am truly glad that you’re enjoying the stories.
I will glady buy books that have been split into 2 parts (even 3!) if it means that you get to make a profit for yourself. I’d rather do that and know that you are able to write more (if you want to of course) than buy 1 book and know that you are struggling because of that
This is absolutely NOT A PROBLEM. Of course you have to eat and anyone with a modicum of common sense appreciates that. Thank you for explaining so clearly what it’s like on your side of the situation. All we fans have to do, is wait. If we want something worth waiting for, then the wait is a little longer. It’s a 1st world problem for us, but for you it’s your livelyhood and I’d much rather pay a little more and wait a bit longer than have someone as talented as you throw in the towel because of a no win situation. I’m so very grateful for the hundreds of hours of enjoyment I’ve benefitted from because of your writing and I would hate it if you felt that you had to sell out just to keep us happy. So take your time and go do your thing however you need to do it. I’ll be happily waiting. Also, two books instead of one feels like winning the fandom lottery! :) x
That’s extremely kind. Thank you.
I really cannot wait to read them when they are out, I would much rather the books come out later than not at all. Thank you for writing such brilliant stories that can give so many of us a short break from reality.
I just wanted to let you know that I think the way you solved this issue was brilliant! I’m very excited to get two new Cassie Palmer
books soon. Keep up the great work and being true to yourself and your writing.
I’m excited for all your stories in whatever form they come!
Do what’s best for you, we love you and your work!
I guess this decision might impact your more casual readership, but I’m satisfied as long as the story remains intact, exactly as you want to tell it. I didn’t know you lost your job. I just assumed you were going the Ilona Andrews route, not allowing the whims of the publishing industry dictate what you write. I’m really sorry, and I look forward to your next book.
I support you in whatever you need to do to continue getting your wonderful stories out. I love your books and will buy whatever way you can get them out. Cant’ wait to read them. You rock!!!!
I’ll second all the other comments saying your choice makes perfect sense, we understand you need to make enough to pay the bills, and I’ll be happy to buy both books. And thank you for the update. Writing is an art, not a science, so delays happen. But it’s always nice to know what’s going on, and what the latest estimate is for when we’ll get to enjoy the next book!
I don’t think any of your fans mind you chopping the book into however many pieces you need to. We want you to make a profit and be successful so you’ll keep writing stories. Your work is wonderful and you deserve to be compensated for it.
Ok, this is exciting. TWO BOOKS, YESSS! More story to submerse myself in. Your books are always worth the wait. I absolutely love your elaborate world building, and would rather have the full fat story than skimmed one. However many books you put out, I will always buy and support because your writing style is my favourite. 😭❤️
So excited for May AHHHHHHHHHHH
Was getting a bit worried. I’m so glad you are fine and the mental tug of war is done for now. I didn’t think I was the only one on pins/needles out here waiting for the next publication. To learn there’s going to be 2 Cassie books instead of 1 actually put a big smile on my face. I too would rather buy 2 and read “your” story as you want to tell it. Thank you for many pleasurable hours getting lost inside your fantasy world!
Thanks!!! I love the idea of two books instead of one, for one thing there Will be more Pritkin (I hope)! Love you! Looking forward to reading these 2 New books!
More is always better from a favorite author. However many books you need to tell your story the way you want to and make a profit is fine with me. I’m always gonna buy them straight away. I’ve always got a budget for good books ;)
Two books is honestly pretty great! I’ve read a lot of series that have gotten very hefty to the end, and it often hurts the story a bit imo. It’s so much better to get a breather, like an intermission at a play, that lets you absorb the story…and avoids that feeling of things getting rushed for the sake of compression! This is all good news in my book!
Oh KC you made my day:) For 1 thing I was getting quite worried we hadn’t heard from you in a while! The second thing is, your giving me 2 books to read with my absolute favorite characters, what more could a gal ask for! Cassie is my bestie and I cant wait to re-immerse myself in her world for weeks on end – I re-read all the previous books each time a new one comes out and I just can not wait for what happens next! A True Fan will never be upset about getting extra content, no matter the cost. You do whatever you need to, to keep this amazing series going!
Cassie and her world is one of my favorite things in the whole world. i regularly go back and reread the series when waiting for new books and fall in love with the characters over and over again. Me and my sister love talking about our favorite parts. Two books? More Cassie and her friends? Some things are worth spending money on and two books of Cassie is definitely worth it. Thank you for the update and I am excited for May and June now!
Thank you for all your hard work and dedication and for always giving us your best work.
Omg this made my day, whatsore important is fetting the whole story because at the end all the little details matter and we can deal with the books split bechase its true you deserve to get paid becuase you have a great imagination to tell stories and it needs to be recognized. :)
100% support this and you! Very excited for the update, you make sure the quality of every book is phenomenal, I’ve never been let down yet! Can’t wait to read both parts!
There is absolutely no problem splitting a good work into two pieces. We just have more to enjoy! I am very much looking forward to reading the next two books, as I am just now re-reading Shatter the Earth and am ready for the story to continue! Stick close to your beliefs, please don’t give them up. This is why we all love your writing! Thank you!!
Totally worth the wait and expense😊
Good. Now I can stop worrying that you are ill or kidnapped by story starved space aliens or just lying in a ditch somewhere. Much betta ! :)
I was, but I fought them off.
I love these books and I will buy both. I would prefer you do it this way so I get the whole story. I hate reading a book and they talk about something that wasn’t previously mentioned, and then I’m going back through the book to see what I missed and never find it!! Keep up the good work!! These books are awesome!!!! And I hope I haven’t missed a Dory book. Queen’s Gambit is the last one I read and the story can’t end on that cliff hanger!!
Two books…..three books…I’m buying whatever you’re selling. ❤
These are your stories and you have the right to deliver them in whatever manner you deem appropriate. I’ll be buying both books and am happy to preorder to help offset your original production costs.
Thank you for your dedication and honesty.
Dear Karen, I don’t think (or hope) that any of us will be annoyed. I think that sounds great! I think we all care about you making profits off of us buying the books and it’s so messed up that you don’t get more.
Can’t wait for the new book and how exciting that we’ll be getting a part two after that!
Thank you so much for putting so much work into the books!
Thank you for your honesty. It is totally understandable and I hope you continue to give us great books which I will still buy. Also…. any news on Junk Magic? 🙂
That’s the next one out. :-)
Thankyou!
You taking care of you allows us to continue to read your books. I typically purchase the ebook version and will be excited to read them both. Not sure if you considered it or not but I have supported some artists through patreon. It may help to at least supplement.
Thank you for the update and maintaining the integrity of the story. We’re seriously invested but it’s worth a longer wait if it gets us two books. Are there still plans for a Lia book?
Yes, Lia will be out next.
I love this communication and appreciate you taking the time to do this. I also appreciate you splitting the book in half, I think it gives us MORE. More of everything, and you still tell the story you feel needs to be told and I am here for all your words.
More books?!? YES PLEASE! I can’t wait to try and shove more Cassie novels into my carry on luggage while my partner silently judges from afar. Who needs to pack more shoes when you can take Cassie and Mircea to the beach, Pritkin begrudgingly joins along. I’ve been reading your books since 2008 and they’re always worth the wait. Please, take your time, do what you need. I’m not going anywhere.
Did you just say that there will be more Cassie books? I’m jumping in joy! Thanks for the updates, was a bit worried for a while since this has been a crazy time around the world. Glad you find a solution. Both your series are getting better and better! Thanks for your hard work!
Update very much appreciated – I was beginning to worry you were unwell.
An author needs to eat or we don’t get stories – so making it financially viable seems more than reasonable! What’s more we will get 2 books to read this year. Whoop! Whoop!
Im with you 100% im so glad to hear an update and now i get 2 books! Not one chopped to all crap. I admit i was afraid when i first started reading the post just like when Cassie went into the graveyard crypt that time lol but then i was like wait u dont make amything off paperbacks as i stare at the top shelf of my bookcase feeling guilty as a B. Then i tell myself ok hardback books from now on! Then im like ill pay $40 bucks a book if i have to! I finally finnished the update and love the workaround you came up with. Honestly im so deep in at this point theres no goin back and i couldnt be happier so. Much love to you and your books and thank you for all the years of adventure that you have given to all of us!!!
You are incredible. Your writing, your world(s), your words… just awesome. I’ve loved your stuff ever since Touch the Dark… then I found the Dory books and devoured all of ’em – then went back to the Cassie books and devoured all of those. You publish and I will buy – if you do ebooks. I take my Nook everywhere and I need my stuff to be on it. I don’t care what you charge for ’em, just please publish on Nook too? I know, I know, B&N is evidently jerking authors around or something, and I’ve given them a piece of my mind over it, but I have almost 100 books on my Nook. Srsly. ALL of your books are on my Nook. If you can’t do ebooks, then I’ll try to understand, but I’m crossing my fingers that I’ll hear about new Cassie books this month! And then more Dory?? Thank you, so very much, for the world you made; the world I escape to every chance I get. <3
All of my books are ebooks, and all are available for the Nook. Ebooks have never been a problem for me, just the paperbacks. But I am hopefully solving that. Thank you for reading. :-)
Nothing new to add, but I too am very happy that you were able to find a way to give us and Cassie the best! I look forward to reading part one and two of ignite the fire…thank you Karen you are one of my all time favourite authors. You deserve a break for all of your hard work. Do as we English do (and Pritkin) and put the kettle on and have a cuppa tea!
I absolutely LOVE this story. I don’t mind that it’s broken into two books. I will buy them until the complete story is finished and told properly. :) Keep up the great work!
Would something like a kickstarter for preorders for physical copies be beneficial in helping with the estimation of how much to order and having money in advance to order? I’ve seen similar done for books that are already written.
1, 2, 3 splits of a book, I don’t mind. I love reading Cassie and Dory books. Also means I can binge read, knowing I’ve got another book coming out shortly to read!!!
What ever happens you need to live, you can’t make money, you can’t write your books. That is a lot worse than paying a bit more, for more books
I am happy to pay for 2 books vs 1 if it means it’s a beautiful story in an awesome world. You are an amazing author and worth every dollar – don’t ever feel that your art isn’t worth payment. You write beautifully and your unique, interesting and humorous storylines just keep pulling me back. I check your website frequently in hope of a story release
Only just seen this update and I have one thing to say: Karen – Thank you! The idea of getting not one, but TWO books is mega exciting, especially with Hijack the Seas already ear-marked to follow the Ignite the Fire double bill story!
Yes – this extra book costs us the reader more – but I very much echo those who have already said it here: your books are worth every penny – even if they were triple the price and so long you were publishing 3 parts to every section of your stories – I’d still pay!
I really hope you can keep to the late May and June release dates – but if you can’t – I like many others will keep waiting and you bet the bank that as soon as copies come up for sale here in the UK – i’ll be snatching them up.
100% support to you Karen for whatever you have to do/charge to pay your bills, earn your living and keep feeding us thirsty readers with your truely wonderful Cassie/Dory world books!
While I have no doubt there will be some who will be upset that this last book is being split in two, it won’t bother me at all. I *want* my favorite authors to make money, or how else are they to continue writing books for my personal enjoyment? I’m more than happy for you to do whatever is needed to continue writing. After all writing is work too, right? So by all means Karen, continue to do whatever you need to do to keep the books coming and I won’t be upset about it. I can’t think of anyone who can afford to work for free. Looking forward to more boks!
The books will both be fairly long. The cutting was to make it possible to put them into print. You will get full books, however.
I was wondering if thiers going to be any updates on Fortune’s Blade
FB is coming this year. I don’t want to make a guess as to when yet.
I’m quite excited that you chose to make 2 books!!!! That’s a bonus! You are such an amazing writer, your books are my favourites. Never, ever doubt that your readers will not support you. Readers are willing to pay for quality. It was the right decision.
I search amazon daily (obsessed much lol), but do not see the book even for pre-order. Any further updates?
When one calculates the time required to produce a book or a painting, an artist can make a higher per-hour wage flipping burgers than giving the world their creativity. Rather than complaining about the two-book solution, I want to thank you for your perseverance. I do have a mercantile question: does a writer get better royalties if the book is purchased on Kobo or Kindle? No paper so overhead should be less.
I don’t think there’s much of a difference where you buy it. You should get it wherever is easiest for you.
Thank you.
As a person who’s worked through the entire pandemic (key worker) and might have the money to buy higher priced or simply more books but honestly haven’t had the time or energy to read anything for a year now; I still prefer and support a story told in full. Even if I can’t read books right away, I buy them. Because I WANT to read them when I have the time and energy again.
So, truly, thank you for sticking to the ideal of giving a work your all in a way that makes you proud and a joy to look forward to, read and re-read. (But make sure you can survive AND live as well. That’s also important.)
I have no problem with you separating the books. Do you have a venmo? I have no problem sending you some extra money to keep these books coming and allow you to eat :) I am on my third read of the latest Dory book and am so excited for whenever the new one comes out. I keep checking for the new Cassie book. I’m so excited it’s coming out soon! I always buy the ebook and the audiobooks of both Dory & Cassie. You’ve done a great job world building and keeping the stories exciting and fresh! I love your writing style.
Hi Karen, I don’t mind paying what it costs for an “extra” mass market paperback. I also don’t mind paying more for a longer book. I’ve read your struggles with the publishing world over book size. Is it the genre (urban fantasy I guess) or that you write a particular type of book with within that genre? It is the case, in my observation, that books that fall into the so-called high fantasy genre don’t have any better world building (just more fight scenes and rambling expositions on social conventions) and are regularly much longer. Ditto to everyone’s comments that you are awesome and I love your books. The world Cassandra and Dorina inhabit is beautifully conceived, consistant between books and even series (one of my bugaboos is changing the underlying assumptions after a series starts – vs an evolving world — which in some cases has caused me to give up on a series,) and the protagonists and supporting characters are well developed and believable. You do your best, which is good enough for me, and yes, I like being kept informed when there are bumps in the road! I don’t do video because filming styles have become so hyper they are too stimulating for me, so I am back to my first love, which is the written word. Most books are way less expensive than a movie ticket, so imo, much better value for money! Looking forward too reading more of your books so please don’t burn out on me!
You’ve been the author I compare all other authors to since I discovered you 12 years ago, and the world you’ve created is basically real to me now, so I will pay whatever for your books! I understand your decision though and it’s so lovely you’ve taken the time to explain what’s going on to your readers. Very excited for the end of June!
This is getting ridiculous. Can you give an update about exactly when it will be released?
No. No, I cannot. I am almost finished, so sometime very soon, but the exact day? When we all know what will happen if I do that? No. Hate me as you like.
Dear Impatient, you’re rude.
Why don’t you write a book series through a pandemic and publish yourself, then let us all know how it’s going. People have lives. All of us can not wait another moment for this series to continue but also understand that its been hard and creativity as well as resources take time. Do us a favor and keep your comment to yourself next time.
Its okay for not knowing an exact date. Honest, I been following this series since 13 years ago with it my favourite book books ( and darnnn do I read a lot of books) . This is the only series I have a full collection of which I update as you release them, since others ( series are meh in comparison). I love that each book is a masterpiece that is a perfect blend of humour/ romance/ fantasy/ magic/ and action! The way you do things blind sides me ………. with how great your are that no other author has done for me ( got too good at knowing what would happen though a book before I got 50 percent). So if your taking longer A “OK “. And the only reason people are upset…… is because THAT IS HOW MUCH BETTER YOUR WORK IS verses anything we read. So I am happy you take your time and work and care for your readers, since I love your work and do not mind paying for it . So thank, very much for making sure series is being finished and and not stopping after publishers kept being mean. This is the one series I will reread over and over again ( I think more around 8 times I reread the whole collection for Cassie Palmer, and still enjoy it with laugh out loud moments.). Darn I almost skipped high school once to go to New York ( out of country) to see you at a book event…. so your work is great. I will look forward to when it out.
Thank you so much for understanding. People are angry with me right now, and I get that. It’s been ten months since anything went out. But I have a book about to debut, another (the other half of Ignite) that is almost finished and will follow shortly after, and a third (Junk Magic) which is more than halfway done. This should be a busy summer, and I think you’ll enjoy the books. I appreciate your patience while I finish all of this up.
If anyone is getting angry or frustrated with you, they need a SERIOUS reality check. It might be 10 months since anything went out, and OK so the release date keeps getting pushed back…but why get upset over that? I am absolutely certain you could release an unfinished book to satisfy these people, but you know what will happen next – those same people will complain the book is rubbish and rushed!
Writing is an art form, and any art form takes time, effort, blood, sweat and tears. It isn’t easy and its your livelihood.
There is no pleasing some people, so don’t even try. Ignore anyone that is giving you hate, they are not worth your time. Those of us that are absolutely in love with your work are everywhere and are all over the world and we’ll wait, happily, as long as it takes for you to complete the exceptionally high quality work we’ve all come to absolutely adore from you. You set the bar so high long ago, and you clear it EVERY time without fail, and frankly EVERY time you nudge the bar higher and higher.
You are truly an exceptional author, please ignore the fools and take as long as you need, and please know there are far more of us that are 100% behind you than there ever could be against you.
Thank you, that is very kind. I am happy to say that the book will be out very soon, and that I think people will be pleased with it. I wish the frustrated ones could understand that I am not deliberately holding up the process. I do not get paid unless I produce something, so if I take extra time on a book, that is a loss of income for me. I have no reason to do that unless I genuinely feel it’s necessary. Thank you for reading, and I hope you’ll enjoy the end result. :-)
At least your books do get released when you have them finished to your satisfaction and I really enjoy them when they are. If people are not happy with a few months wait, heaven help them, I have been waiting since before my son was born for Melani Rawn’s The Captals Tower, fir reference my son is 24 this year . :-)
I absolutely love your books!! Thank you for writing them and caring enough to make them right!! I would rather pay more for a good story than pay less for a half assed story.
Please keep writing and take your time. I’m a little like omg go ahead and finish but I would rather you feel good with the story when you release than some rushed and incorrect story. I’ve been reading your books for about 14 years so please don’t stop. I buy them when you release them. You are literally my favorite author and I wouldn’t change that for the world. I love the characters, the world it means the world to me that you keep writing and I will forever be a fan. I know these stories like the back of my hand and wouldn’t give them up for anything in this world or the next. Please don’t stop.
Hi Karen,
So happy to have the whole story (even if it’s in two books). Where will we be able to buy it/when? I’m on the edge of my seat!
Ignite the Fire: Incendiary is now out, and Ignite the Fire: Inferno is finished and being polished. :-)
I would like to say that as a fan I would rather buy two books with the story the way you intended it than one book that is skewed to fit in less space. I understand that you have to pay bills like the rest of us and appreciate the hard work that you put in to entertaining us. I do not mind having to buy two books to get the better story. I love your characters and stories. Thanks
I am appalled at the so called “fans” for being hateful and impatient. I find that authors who pump out mass quantities of books do so most often with serious lackluster content. Many great authors take years in between books…it is a reality. Your series keeps getting better and better with each book! Your books are a gift and you are a gifted storyteller.
I understand people being impatient. I don’t like the wait for things I want, either. But all I can tell anyone is that I am going as fast as I possibly can. Ignite is now out, and Inferno will follow shortly. Perhaps that will help. :-)
Reading your books has been an ongoing thing for me for longer than I care to remember. I would always be excited to have one of them to curl up with and read on my vacation from work. I feel extremely grateful for your dedication to your craft — you do not disappoint! Good things come to those who wait. Even if I don’t have one of the books with me for this vacation, I will make time for it once it does come out. The dedication to your books and story are admirable. So many others try to meet hard deadlines and then disappoint because of half-baked or inconsistent products. I applaud the hard choice you make and will gladly support you when you do have more!
I absolutely love your books. For those who are getting angry, they should instead think, the longer it takes the better it will be, so the more it can be enjoyed. So excited for the next one. Looking forward to it.
I love your books. That being said, will you be releasing the books via kindle together? Or will they be separate as well? Also, have you thought of just releasing kindle books and doing special “Collectors” additions that are beautiful (and pricey) for those who wish to pay for it?
The books are both full length novels, so they will be released separately. The first is out now, called Ignite the Fire: Incendiary, and the next is Ignite the Fire: Inferno. It will hopefully be out in a month. I have been asked about doing hardcover versions, as some seem to want them, but haven’t had time. Plus, I’m slightly scared of more formatting issues! But I will look into it. :-)
It would be nice to have an update…
It’s out now.
I fully support you with this decision! I check weekly to see if the first book has come out, and have since the beginning of May because I’m optimistic and so excited for when it will be released. Equally I don’t mind waiting as I’d rather you publish what you’re happy with. I’ve loved these books for so many years now. Thank you for putting so much work into crafting these books. I think, as readers, we are very lucky with the amount of careful consideration you put into your work. Each book just gets better, and that’s difficult to achieve with a long series.
It would be nice too have any update at all especially for those who have been checking for one nearly everyday
It’s out now.
You could at least update your fans I get that your busy but after moving the date and also saying that it would be out late may it would be nice to let people know what’s going on.
I let you know as much as I did. I am not keeping secrets from you, but I often do not know when a project will be finished, just my best guess. And after several guesses are wrong, it gets exhausting to keep trying to figure it out while also wrestling with the storyline. I think I should just stop announcing at all, and simply put the books out as they are done–which Ignite the Fire now is.
I really love your stories I would happily buy both. I was wondering if you had an official release date for them?
Ignite the Fire: Incendiary is out now. Inferno in probably a month. :-)
While I understand that folks are frustrated, I don’t think that a lot of folks understand that the pandemic hits everyone differently. Also that you aren’t with a publishing company. (Which you fully explained). I have so much respect for you for continuing to push out your books. I will buy and read every single one. I’m about to buy the entire series for my best friend to bot support you and force her to read them or feel bad!
But man, shit happens. One of my most favorite authors has two VERY popular series. One which she hasn’t dropped a book for since *check notes* 2014. And she’s starting a brand new series. (Though a new Merry is promised!) Another author ended her series on a MAD cliffhanger and started a new and unrelated series!
Annoying? Sure. Am I going to bitch about it? No. Writing isn’t just blowing out book after book. Sometimes you need a break from your characters. Sometimes your characters aren’t speaking to you. SOMETIMES your world building is so insane (MA’AM) that you have to go back and research your own stuff! I will buy your books until you stop publishing them. (Pls no). And I am super super excited about Junk Magic!
To anyone complaining: There are other books out there. Other just as amazing books. Take the time to expand your library and fall in love with a couple of new authors while this one gets the time she needs to make Cassie’s world even bigger.
And to Karen: You do you girl. Your fans will be here ready to absorb it all!
Forever a Fan <3
All of what Jayde just said. That right there. Yes.
I’ve been reading this series since I was 17 (I’m 32 now). Karen, your dedication to this series is amazing, I’m thrilled you’re persevering and still working hard at it and telling the best story you can. You’re an absolute boss and I can’t wait for your coming books. To second Jayde: you do you girl! We’re right there with you!
Remember to breathe and take care of yourself. <3
Preach!!
There are no deadlines here. Ms. Chance, thanks for your updates. For those folks getting impatient, reread the series or pick up a new one for the time being.
Ms. Chance, the nay-sayers can be the loudest voice in the room, but they do not speak for anyone but themselves. Take time this summer to relax and enjoy the sunshine.
Hi,
I love the books and to be honest I don’t mind how you split the story. I would prefer you are happy with what you put out as that comes through the characters and story. I would buy more books in any format if they are true to world than if it was rushed but I think the most important thing to remember is communication if you have to change the pub date no problem just tells us, if there’s a wait to edit update us.
It’s the waiting in silence with no update that’s frustrating sometimes.
Thank you for Cassie’s world I’m very much enjoying the ride can’t wait for Ignite.
It’s funny how you only let the comments through that compliment you and not my several that I have made just asking if you had an update
No, I just get tired of all the hate, as anyone would. Also, if someone is offensive, then I’m less likely to give them space on my blog. You don’t have to be nice, but you do have to be civil.
Hi Karen,
I just finished Shatter the Earth and am looking forward to the new book.
Is there an update? I understand it’s taking longer than expected, but we’re close to July now.
Just hope to see it soon! Love your novels!!! ❤️❤️❤️
It’s out now. :-)
Karen,
Writing is a passion, and truly an art form in words. People need to understand that thou you write these wonderful pages of art for all of us to step into the fantasy world of all the characters in them, it is STILL your sole means of income…..i.e…no income means NO books… so these ” wonderful people” that are so eager to throw useless derogatory comments at you need to look in the mirror of life and ask themselves if they would work for free…answer Hell no… so Dear Karen….keep writing those wonderful words, so we all can read them and continue to step into their world.
My only question is…is there a release date for Ignite the Fire?
Thanks for all the wonderful fantasies you have been able to let me step into with every flip of the pages.
Yes, Ignite the Fire: Incendiary is now out, and Inferno is finished and being polished now. I should have it up in a month, or earlier if I get lucky! Thank you for your kindness.
Hi, Cassie
I know you already received like a ton of comments supporting you (because you a 100% deserve it) so this is going into the pile too, but I wanted to pretty much repeat what everyone else has said so far: Thank you.
Thank you for looking out for yourself, your books have brought a lot of joy to us and the last thing we want is for you to live in financial misery. To be honest when I read the “No one would buy a book that’s more expensive” I immediately thought “I’d buy it five times if necessary, you underestimate my savings power”, but COVID has been rough and I’m happy that you considered that on your readers behalf.
Thank you for being true to yourself and your work, it’s honestly disappointing when authors are forced to chop so many important and interesting things about their books only to fit the word count. If you believe that 20 books is what you need to tell the story of Cassie as perfect as it must be, then do so, and separate them on as many parts as you deem necessary. The quality of your books so far has been amazing and I wouldn’t expect it to be any different if it’s you, nor would I want that, so I trust you to make the right call at all times.
I’ve been struggling for years with severe clinical depression and suicidal tendencies and, not joking here, the Cassandra Palmer series has been one of the few things that has truly made me happy (Yes, in my sessions with my psychologist and the “name the things that motivate you on staying alive”, reading your books and waiting for the next one is on the list. It’s quite dramatic, I know), not to mention that I absolutely love your comedy. No matter how much time you need, I’ll patiently wait for your books!
I’ll forever be grateful for the hard work you have put on your series and will support you no matter your decisions!
You have me choking up, Cindy. I have clinical depression as well, and have flirted with suicide for years (both my maternal grandparents and many family members died that way, so it’s a big fear of mine). I’ve had a really bad year, as I’m sure many of us have, but the idea that anything I wrote might have helped you in any way is so very encouraging, I can’t even tell you. I really hope you’ll take good care of yourself and be well in these difficult days. They will pass!
Hi Karen,
Very eager to read your next book, is there another update on this?
Love love love your novels and shorts!
Sincerely,
Hope ❤️
yes, Ignite the Fire: Incendiary is now out, although it may take a few days to show up everywhere, as I am dealing with some formatting issues. Inferno should follow in a month or so.
If george r r Martin fans can wait years for a continuation of their game of thrones books, surely we can be patient enough for our next installment.
I appreciate the books and storyline. I appreciate the commitment to your craft and vision to not release an incomplete version.
GOT is a good example of when rushing something can lead to less than sensical consequences. (In the case of GOT, show outpaced the books. Even Martin claims the ending was disappointing to him.)
Thank you for your sharing of your stories and time.
Any chance of an update?
Yes, Incendiary is out now. But it may take a few days to show up everywhere.
Hi, just checking in. We’re in July now and still no sign of Ignite the Fire, part 1. Are you still planning on selling it in 2021?
Yes, Ignite the Fire: Incendiary is up now, and Inferno is finished and being polished. Should be out in a month or so.
I have enjoyed both of your series and wouldn’t mind paying extra for the books–I buy the paperbacks. I have been really busy during the pandemic and hadn’t checked your site in a long time. I checked Amazon, but did not see the first Ignite book. If you’re still writing it, no worries–I just want to make sure I am checking the right place so I don’t miss it when it comes out. Will you still be publishing/selling through Amazon?
Yes, it’s out now. But you won’t be paying more. Both Ignite the Fire books are full length novels.
While I am impatient for the next book I want to thank you for taking the time to make it right which I know takes time. Heck I write research articles and that takes on average 2 years of writing so I know it’s important. I have bought all of your books and will continue to buy all of your books provided you keep up with the fantastic writing I have come to expect from you — no matter how long it takes you to write each. :)
Fair enough if the story needs more time. I will buy however many books it takes.
Communication is key updates even if you don’t wish to give specific dates which is understandable. As being left weeks expecting a book or two now as previous updates given is not fair to those who have audio credits that are allocated or gift credits on Amazon that were loaded for the release date. I now only have a week left to use them and will have to replace them when your books are released. Not the end of the world but slightly frustrating,
I have used this time to re read the series and I must say it only gets better with each re read. You have certainly created an amazing cast of characters that I have bonded with in world that is full of surprises and twists that I never see coming.
Thank you
I understand where you’re coming from. The problem is that updates are sometimes difficult, as writing is not an exact science. I have had plenty of long days where I finished with less than I started with! I am also getting tired, as I am sure a lot of people are, with making projected deadlines only not to be able to meet them. It puts a lot of pressure on me, which then slows down the writing process and becomes a vicious cycle. I am not trying to inconvenience anyone, and most of the time, I can make at least a somewhat accurate estimate about how long a book will take. But these two kicked my butt. I had to concentrate on the books and getting them done, or that would never have happened. Hope you understand.
You are a wonderful talented writer and I personally appreciate the world you have made. I come back to it no matter I have heard/read them so many times I know it by heart. The characters are my happy place. All that being said, take care of your needs. Splitting the book is fine! What is important is that you are safe, fed, and have a roof over your head. Much love to you ma’am and as always you rock!
Super love your books ❤️ Hope the writing is going well! Just saw the awesome shirt designs through the freebie section and I know what I’ll be doing this weekend 😂 Also, super support the two books, I’m excited that you’re out there going it without the publisher. Hopefully that lessons the stress and pressure. Make sure you enjoy some of this warm and awesome summer though 😁
Karen, to be perfectly honest whether I had the money or not I would easily buy a $50 book if it meant I get to read more about my favorite characters and John Pritkin and Cassandra Palmer are by far my favorite characters of all time. I love them. They’re family, but I understand having to do what you have to do to continue living. I will be buying every book you ever produce with zero questions asked.
Signed,
Seriously I love your writing so much.
I think I might have mislead some people. The books (Ignite the Fire: Incendiary–out now! and Ignite the Fire: Inferno) are full-length books. Incendiary was 126,500 words, which is actually above the max (120,000) that most publishers prefer. I am still polishing Inferno, but it looks like it will be about the same, if not a bit longer. So you will be getting two full-length novels, which both form a long and (hopefully) engrossing story. I would never expect people to pay a full price for half a book!
Hi Karen,
I hope your ok, with it being so quiet I’m worried something has happened to you. I know I’m not the only fan whose worried you may be suffering some health issues and that is why your silent. Hope your ok! Much love!
Not physical health, thankfully. Mentally . . . well, I’ve been better. But the book is out! Yay! And the sequel is done and being polished. So there’s that. :-)
Karen this is 2 months past your last guesstimate. Could we get an update ?
Yes, I published it yesterday. Ignite the Fire is available on Amazon right now and should be everywhere within a few days. I am working on some formatting/uploading issues at the moment.
Can we have some kind of update? Just so we know you are alive and well please.
Yes, alive and well, if tired! The book is out now.
Any updates for the release date of Ignite the fire?
Yes, the first book (Ignite the Fire: Incendiary) is out now, although I haven’t announced it formally yet as I am still working to get it up everywhere and to get the formatting right. The sequel (Ignite the Fire: Inferno) is finished and in the polishing stage.
The only thing I ever worry about is the story being left unfinished. I will pay whatever is necessary to get the next installment of the story! Thank you!
I would never do that. Come what may, I am going to finish this.
Hi Karen. You write it and I’ll buy it. Put out the books in as many parts as you need to. I’m good.
Hey Karen! Super excited for the new books. Just hoping you can pop in and let us all know you’re doing ok? Sending love!
Hope everything’s okay! I’ve been anxiously awaiting the release of Ignite the Fire, but it’s been noted you haven’t even commented in awhile. Fans are starting to worry about you!
I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to worry anyone. I can go into my head when wrestling with a problem sometimes. But the book is now out and the follow up is being polished. Should also be out soon.
This is in NO WAY a criticism; I’m just wondering if there is a publishing date update ☺
Yes, yesterday. :-D
It’s worth the wait!! So excited for the new one!
Has anything been said lately? Just about done re-reading and was hoping these books would be out soon, but I’ve noticed Karen’s been quiet lately just hoping all is well.
Ignite the Fire: Incendiary is now out (although it will be a few days before all formats are available everywhere). Ignite the Fire: Inferno is finished and I am polishing/tweaking it now.
I hope I don’t come off as rude, but I do hope you’re okay! I don’t mind waiting for a book, but we haven’t heard on a while and I’m sure I speak for quite a few of us when I say we are worried about you!
That’s very kind of you. I’ve been having a bad year, I’m not going to lie, but I have finished the book and am very happy about that. Both parts are done and one is now out, so things are improving. :-)
Carissima Karen, le tue parole mi toccano il cuore. Devi dividere in due il libro? Fa niente. Ho letto tutte le tue storie in inglese, nonostante io sia italiana, perché in Italia non hanno più proseguito con la traduzione. Me n’è importato? No. Quindi dividilo in 2, 3, 10 parti, fa nulla. Vogliamo solo continuare a sognare con te! Con affetto
Dearest Karen, your words touches my heart. You have to split your novel on 2 parts? No problem. I have read all your novels in English, despite I’m Italian, because in Italy didn’t continue to translate your books. Did I care? No, I didn’t. So, split it on 2, 3 or 10 parts, no matters. We only want to keep dream with you. Love
That’s wonderful, Vanessa! I am so happy that you’re able to continue reading them. The latest installment is out and the next will follow shortly. I hope you enjoy!
I hope everything is ok with you, dear Karen and the only reason you haven’t been posting anything new is because those pesky books have you in a bind. I hope you are safe, healthy and happy.
That’s very kind. The book is out now (the first part) and I am working on polishing the second. Hope to have it out as well soon.
Hello is there any new information? It’s been 4 months since the last update. Love love your books just curious how things are going.
Yes, it’s out now, although it will be a couple of days before all formats are available.
Hi Karen, are you ok? No ones heard from you, no response. We’re all very very worried about you. Hope your taking care of yourself in these weird times. ❤️❤️❤️
Yes, been having a hard year (which I am sure is true for many, unfortunately.) But the book is out now, so things are looking up!
Hi, Karen. May we have another update?
Yes, it’s out now, although it will be a few more days until all versions are available everywhere. But Amazon has the ebook.
Thank you! Ordered it and already getting ready to absorb it!! 😁
As a long time fan, absolutely take care of you first! The waiting is no problem- I have read books I would never have tried before so thanks!
The reality of Covid has many of us under stress and the updates that you are well and still working are much appreciated. I agree with you that the guessing of dates has to be stressful for you. We support you and thank you for sharing your gift! It’s been an amazing adventure.
I also enjoy hardbacks and if you should decide to go that route I would enjoy them too. I read them so much that hardbacks typically hold up better.
Hi Karen,
You shouldn’t ever have to be worried about making ends meat after devoting your life into making other people happy, seriously, I’d be happy paying £20 per book – just can’t wait for it to be released at this point – I feel like I’ve been checking for it every couple of weeks for 12+ months :(
Hi Ms Chance
I have been trying to find Ignite the Fire on Amazon but no luck. Could you tell me if it was published yet?
Yes, it’s out now, but I am still working to get all formats up. Amazon has the ebook, and within a few days, I should have it everywhere.
Just curious if you have any updates? Can’t wait to read the next part of Cassie’s story!
Yes, it’s out now, although I am still working to get all formats loaded.
Thank you so much for the detailed explanation and update! Personally, I don’t mind waiting for the new book because I know it will be worth it. I just love those characters and the complex world-building.
I saw the e-book for “Ignite the Fire” on amazon.de today and am now waiting for the print edition. I am so grateful that you try to find a way to still get the books out in print, too.
Take care and best wishes!
I have read the book (stayed up all night because I had surgery and the pain didn’t let me sleep) and I can say it was worth the wait!!
I laughed, a certain part made me cry and I kept guessing what would happen next and it is such a good book!!
After this year, this book gave me such joy and I know Inferno will be even better.
I can only say thank you.
Inferno is better, but I’m glad you enjoyed this one! They read well as one big book.
Thanks for finally talking about > Update #2 Ignite the Fire – Karen Chance < Loved it!
